Solar energy is used
Solar energy can be used for day lighting, cooking, heating water or other
fluids, distillation, disinfection, making saline water potable and high
temperature process heating.

Photovoltalic cell
A solar cell (also called a photovoltaic cell) is an electrical
device that converts the energy of light directly into electricity by the photovoltaic effect. It is a form of
photoelectric cell (in that its electrical characteristics-- e.g.
current, voltage, or resistance-- vary when light is incident upon it) which,
when exposed to light, can generate and support an electric current without
being attached to any external voltage source.

The World Solar Challenge is a biennial solar-powered car race which covers 3,021 km
(1,877 mi) through the Australian Outback, from Darwin
to Adelaide.
The race attracts teams from around the world, most of which are fielded by
universities or corporations although some are fielded by high schools. The race has a 20-year history
spanning nine races, with the inaugural event taking place in 1987
The objective of this competition is to promote research on solar-powered cars. Teams from universities and
enterprises participate. In 2005, 22 teams from 11 countries entered the primary
race category.

Solar Cells are made of silicon
Photovoltaic solar cells are thin silicon disks that convert sunlight into
electricity. These disks act as energy sources for a wide variety of uses,
including: calculators and other small devices; telecommunications; rooftop
panels on individual houses; and for lighting, pumping, and medical
refrigeration for villages in developing countries. Solar cells in the form
of large arrays are used to power satellites and, in rare cases, to
provide electricity for power plants

What is the effectiveness of solar
Solar energy is efficient enough to make a difference. Since solar energy is
created from a renewable energy source, any amount of energy produced is
helpful to people and the environment.

What is a power tower
The solar power tower, also known as 'central tower' power plants or 'heliostat'
power plants or power towers, is a type of solar furnace using a tower to receive the
focused sunlight. It uses an array of flat, movable mirrors (called heliostats)
to focus the sun's rays upon a collector tower (the target). Concentrated solar
thermal is seen as one viable solution for renewable, pollution free energy.
